Heute vor genau 210 Jahren erreichte der Brite Mungo Park als 1. Europäer den Niger. Eine Unermessbare Leistung. Ich bin beeindruckt und bedanke mich auch bei T.C. Boyle für sein die damaligen Ereignisse nachvollziehendes Buch mit dem im Titel genannten Titel. Mungo Park starb 1806 bei einer zweiten Reise auf dem Niger. Dort wo er starb befindet sich ein großer See, der 1969 zur Elektrizitätsgewinnung aufgestaut wurde.
